When two become one

For some two years now the relationship between Unlox and PhoneGoods in Morley has become increasingly stronger. Over recent months it has become apparent that Unlox needed to widen its horizons and to that end has now merged the two independent businesses into one.

With the merger come great benefits to our existing customers as well as new ones, for a start you will now have access to pretty much most of the handset unlocking in existence from ALL manufacturers. BB5 can really be unlocked

Paid a visit to PhoneGoods in Leeds today as I needed some stuff. We were talking about the unlocking of the so called BB5 handsets and they were explaining the difficulty they have persuading people that it IS real. Since they started unlocking them they have had a number of calls to see if it was real or just another scam.

Well for what its worth while I was there I personally witnessed the unlocking of a Nokia N70 a Nokia N90 and 2 Nokia 6630. I watched as they showed me with their own phones for sale in the shop which was 2 N70, 1 6680 and a 6630. Mike explained that because of the history of BB5 and some of the deception that surrounded it, people are genuinely untrusting.

The good news however is they can be unlocked and the guys at PhoneGoods are absolutely certain that the newer models such as the 6280, N73 and N95 will follow soon. Just in case you are still left with doubt here is their GUESTBOOK. As you will see the entries are now coming in that verifies the unlock abilities they have.

Many of our visitors will have noticed our website change recently. The look and feel has stayed pretty much the same as many of you wished it to. The real difference now is that we offer "Real Time" nokia unlock codes, no longer do you have to wait for the email with your codes in it. Once payment has been made and completed your codes will be displayed with the instructions on how to enter them, live and real time.

As of today "3rd September 2006" there is still NO remote unlock codes for Nokia BB5 handsets.

The networks are currently the only people that can unlock these particular handsets and the cost varies widely, however they are getting their act together though with the exception of 3 “Three”. My Visit to PhoneGoods

Back in March I talked about some friends of ours at PhoneGoods. I visited them this weekend and was amazed to see how far they had come.

Unlox use PhoneGoods for cable unlocking and for referrals when the handset can not be unlocked by us remotely. They not only have capabilities to unlock most mobile phones but also have a vast product line of mobile accessories, way more than when I first visited them. If you live in Leeds UK or are close, it would be well advised to pay them a visit, they are selling nearly ALL there accessories at half the price most shops are. They are also only charging £7.50 for ALL the handsets that they unlock no matter how new they are.

I needed my LCD replaced on my Sony Ericsson K750i, I was quoted £65 by my local shop, at PhoneGoods it was £45 and that's NOT because I am a friend. I am more than happy to promote a company like PhoneGoods simply because they are good at what they do.

As of today "13th June 2006" there is still NO remote unlock codes for the above handsets. There are still, despite sites like ours saying otherwise, “Scum Bags” claiming that they can provide software to unlock them.... THEY CANT. We have heard and seen many websites making claims to be able to unlock them.... THEY CANT.

The networks are currently the only people that can unlock these particular handsets and the cost and delivery varies widely. We will of course publish on this website and www.unlox.co.uk when remote codes are available.

Nokia unlocking and the 3 network

The following is an "Un-Edited" email I received about 20 minutes ago. I have asked the permission of the sender to post it and have ensured anonymity.

i rang up three uk for a unlocking solution and he guy said "that would be #200" so off course i payed like the stupid idiot i am and 2 weeks later three phoned up and said that they cant unlock it and that they weren't gonna give me my money

in conclusion if your thinking of getting a nokia 6280 or n70 dont get it on three

Our suggestion to anybody suffering the same fate is as follows:

1, Write a complaint to BBC Watchdog - www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog
2, Complain to Trading Standards www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/
3, File a small claim in your local Small Claims Court.

"Its theft", no ifs or buts "Its theft".

3 are making many enemies and need to be taken to task.

Mobile Phone Unlocking News

Finally I have a chance to make an entry on our Blog. We have been very busy of late setting up a relationship with a mobile phone unlocking shop in Leeds called PhoneGoods.co.uk. We have established the relationship rather than doing it ourselves simply because we have seen these guys in action. They have all the latest equipment and also sell many accessories within the shop too at VERY reasonable rates. They are also unique in that whatever handset they can unlock from whatever brand it is ALL £7.50. Pay them a visit at www.phonegoods.co.uk.

Just a quick update on BB5 handsets like the Nokia 6630, Nokia 6680 and Nokia N70. These handsets DESPITE what you may read elsewhere CANNOT be unlocked yet other than directly by the networks themselves.

I would also like to give our unlocking staff some credit here. Recently there has been a lot of confusion about the Nokia 6111 and in particular the way to generate codes for the different types, at unlox we knew immediately what the difference was and our customers benefited immediately. The staff we have here are ever vigilant to the changing world of mobile phone unlocking, and you can be assured that we will change with it.

It was a 3G Christmas

Since my last update before Christmas it’s been a very busy period for us. We worked all through Christmas and New Years, there was however a distinct difference this year, it seems that finally everyone has jumped on to the 3G bandwagon. This is in no small measure thanks to Nokia and their great 3G handsets like the Nokia N70. It has also been one of the most frustrating periods since "NO ONE" at present can unlock them. We have been inundated with requests to unlock them and it creates such a negative vibe here when we have to tell them we can’t.

We have also noticed a significant increase in the amount of people saying they can unlock them, now I don’t want to get into a slanging match with anybody for criticising them, but the truth is "nobody" can unlock these Nokia 3G handset. We are aware that there is a guy in Belgrade that is claiming that he is unlocking them, however I have to have serious concerns when he is charging £65 not including shipping and the fact that your phone has to be disassembled prior to sending it to him. Add to that the fact that it could take up to 21 days and well I just don’t see the point. Our stand point is a simple one, once we know for sure that unlocking is available for these handsets, regardless of whether it is us that is doing them or not, we will inform the community immediately.

I also want to mention at this point that we will shortly be announcing the launch of our new postal unlocking service. This has been brought about because of the amount of requests we have received for us to offer the service. Over the holidays we invested heavily in the latest technology and are currently in negotiations to acquire a shop/office. As always you can be guaranteed that we will break the mould, we have decided that we will charge exactly the same price, regardless of model or make. Currently the price is estimated to be £12.50 including return shipping by "Royal Mail Special Delivery". Please keep an eye on this blog for further information.

Last year I got ripped off on Ebay when I purchased a Nokia 6630, it was advertised as unlocked so I thought I would have no problem. The phone arrived just after Christmas and to my dismay the handset was not only NOT unlocked but it was Blacklisted as well. Rather than just take it on the chin I contacted the Police who traced the seller and arrested him. Scant consolation considering that I lost my money and my phone to boot.

As of today "12th December 2005" there is still NO remote unlock codes for the above handsets. There are still many rumours circulating that certain unlockers can unlock these handsets.... THEY CANT. We have heard and seen many websites making claims to be able to unlock them.... THEY CANT.

The networks are currently the only people that can unlock these particular handsets and the cost varies widely. We will of course publish on this website and www.unlox.co.uk when remote codes are available.

Buying Mobiles on Ebay

Well Christmas is only a few weeks away and the mad rush is on to buy that new mobile phone you have wanted. Christmas tends to be a VERY busy period for us and we will be open throughout the holidays.

Christmas is also the time when unscrupulous people try to sell off "dodgy" phones on Ebay. Last Christmas we had 7 customers who bought handsets on Ebay that when they received it, it turned out to be a stolen phone. We had a further 10 who bought mobile phones advertised as "Unlocked" only to find that they were not.

Now we are not saying that all mobile phones sold on Ebay are dodgy, what we are saying is please take adequate precautions before ordering. Verify with the seller that the handset is indeed unlocked or not, if it is not, then ask if there has been any previous unlock attempts. As for stolen phones, there are a couple of things you can do to call the sellers bluff:

1. Ask if they can provide photographic proof of purchase i.e. a receipt.
2. Ask if the handset will come in its original box
3. Ask if they will provide you with the IMEI so you can check with the "stolen Handset Database" to see that it is legit
4. Ask Where the phone came from

The answers to the above will normally set off any alarm bells depending on what the answers are. So please don't let the minority of "Dodgy Dealers" spoil your Christmas, handsets are expensive enough without buying one that is only going to be useful as a "Paper Weight".

3G sim card into 2G/2.5G handsets

Every now and again we will have a customer contact us to tell us that the unlock procedure has not worked. On receiving contact we will endeavour to find out why! Normally it is resolved fairly quickly as the customer has either entered the unlock code incorrectly or provided incorrect details.

Every now and again we will get a customer who has a normal 2G/2.5G handset and they are trying to use a 3G sim card in it, this of course is not possible. Without boring you with all the technical details, a 3G sim card interacts with the handset in a different way to that of a 2G/2.5G. Putting a 2G/2.5G sim card into a 3G handset will work however; this is because the 3G handset is backward compatible.

Some of the newer handsets that are coming out are “Dual Mode”. This means that they can use cards of both types. As a rule of thumb, if the handset is not a 3G handset you will not be able to use a 3G sim card in it.

Christmas and the mobile phone rush!

I often get inquired of “I bet you have got the best phone there is haven’t you”. Well the answer is no not really. My own phone is a Nokia 6310i that I have had for the last 2 years. You see I am not into all these new fangled things that have 3g, gps, gprs, Bluetooth and make you a cup of tea in the morning. I want my phone to work and I want it to work wherever I am in the world.

Christmas is nearing now and of course my daughter is after a new phone, she wants the camera, video and mp3 player type of phone, this despite the fact that she has a perfectly good mp3 player and the use of my £700 digital camera. I just can’t figure it out, it seems that mobile phones have become this “Status Symbol” of power, the more features you have the better you as a person are. Thing is we bought her an all singing all dancing phone last year for £275 and now she wants a new one, I just can’t weigh her up.

My advice to people is simple and an old saying, “if it isn’t broke why fix it” that’s why my mobile phone is actually a mobile phone that I use to call people.

With all the latest phones that have been released it looks like I am going to have a busy Christmas yet again, don’t get me wrong I am not complaining, but my heart does go out to all the parents being pestered by their kids for a new phone. Whatever happened to the kids that would open their expensive gift, ignore it, and then play with the box?

Nokia Codes - To Pay or Not To Pay

We had an interesting discussion today via email with a gentleman in Spain. He was telling us that he had tried Nokia codes from some of the free websites that you can find on the internet and that the codes he was given had not worked. He wanted to know why our codes would be different and how we could be sure that they would work. We told him that since he had already entered 5 codes prior to contacting us that remote codes would no longer work and that the only solution to him was to have the phone "Cable Unlocked". He went away a little frustrated with the prospect of having to spend MORE money having it cable unlocked than he would have if he had come to us straight away.

It still amazes me how many times we hear this story, I mean I understand that people will always try to get something for nothing, its human nature, but there is that famous saying here in the UK and no doubt other parts of the world "You get what you pay for"! At unlox.co.uk we are constantly striving to improve the service levels we provide and part of that is the research that goes into unlocking methods. Over recent months the methods used to unlock a mobile phone have changed significantly so too has the support we have to give to customers to help them enter the codes. If you choose to try the unlock codes from some of the free sites out there then you also choose to make what could end up been an expensive decision. We are not telling you not to try the codes from these sites we are just saying be careful and make an educated decision on which direction you go.

Its also worth pointing out that our site as do many others will not guarantee success on your handset if it has had prior unlock attempts nor will we offer refunds where it becomes clear that previous unlock attempts have taken place. I know that I personally will always look at a paid option first because I have more confidence of success, but then again I would say that wouldn’t I.

"Cannot Undo Restriction" / "Not Allowed"

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of times in any given week we get customers email us saying after they entered our Nokia Codes their phone said "Cannot Undo Restriction" or "Not Allowed". It seems some people just refuse to read the instructions on our website and just go ahead and order anyway.

I mean we make it VERY clear:

You are advised that you should NOT order unlocking codes if the
target handset has been subject to a previous unlocking attempt!
Refunds will NOT be given in such circumstances.

The above actually appears on ALL order pages so it is pretty clear. Just to clear things up "Cannot Undo Restriction" or "Not Allowed" means that the handset has had at least 5 previous unlock attempts and the handset can now only be unlocked by "Cable Method". You can normally get this done at your local mobile phone repair shop.

My other favourite is when we receive email saying that the phone unlocked but when they put their new sim card in it says "Sim Card Rejected". On further questioning it normally turns out that they are trying to use a 3G sim card in a non-3G handset. You can't do that since they are completely different cards, it's like trying to put 35mm film into a digital camera. Anyway that's my rant over for today.

Nokia Software Flashing

Got another call today from a guy who had been to a shop locally to get his Nokia 6220 flashed and unlocked. The shop he took it to were obviously not very good at what they do since they did indeed flash the handset but neglected to unlock it. Fortunately the gentleman concerned had the good sense to contact us prior to ordering unlock codes.

I explained that we do not unlock handsets that have had previous unlock attempts or have been re-flashed in any way. That said he sounded genuine so I thought I would try the code with him and see what happened. When he entered the code it became quickly apparent that not only was the phone NOT unlocked, the software flash had also failed. So basically the guy lost £25.00 and still his phone is foo-barred.

Our advice in this situation is to take the handset back and insist that the handset is flashed properly as well as unlocked. If the second time it fails then get your money back (If You Can) and find a more professional shop or store to do it. DO NOT give up on it though because it can be fixed.

I get so fed up with amateurs who take peoples “Expensive” handsets and screw around with them without a full and concise knowledge of what they are doing. I just hope that this article will make you think and research a little better before you let someone else mess with your phone. I mean ask yourself this “Why do you think we don’t re-flash handset and only do remote Nokia codes”. The answer is simple, remote Nokia codes are 100% safe and cannot affect any part of your handset other than unlocking the network restriction.

There are some really professional mobile phone repair shops out there, if you are going to have your phone done find the best one, usually the one who has been around for quite some time.

Nokia Unlocking - Even at Hospital

I have just got back from the hospital, don't worry I am not dying or anything, just a check up. Did my bit in the hospital and made my way out to the car park. Now I should explain at this point that my car has a sticker on the rear window that advertises Nokia Codes from www.unlox.co.uk.

As I am making my way across the road I see 3 people, 2 of them nurses standing next to my car. I asked if there was a problem, "No" came the reply "We just want our phones unlocked". Now normally I would be a little annoyed but since they were nurses I thought what the hell. I got my laptop out of the boot and attached my mobile phone, logged on to my website and placed the orders that they wanted and unlocked their phones.

It just shows what a bit of marketing and "Wireless Internet" is capable of. I am thinking of going back next week and just parking in the car park for the full day to see what happens…. NOT.

Nokia Codes - Protect Yourself

It still sickens me even after all this time the number of complaints I hear about other so called unlocking sites....

Over the last couple of months we have received a number of distressing emails from people who have tried order Nokia Codes from other unlocking sites, these ranged from "not receiving codes" to "once the order was placed and they had paid their money they were emailed to say that they could not unlock that particular type of handset and that they could spend the money they had paid on other things sold by them". There are many more that are not too dissimilar tone.

At present, there is NO legislation or law in the UK which prohibits the unlocking of a mobile phone enabling the use of any SIM card from any network.

A lot of confusion surrounds the new BB5 handsets.

Can they be unlocked?
Will the locks be removed if i re-flash it?
Ive seen someone overseas who say they can do it!

No No No No No, please take my advice, these handsets can NOT be unlocked by anyone or any method at the moment other than going direct to the "Originating Network" who then go directly to Nokia themselves.

Please do not be fooled by unscruplulous people who just want to take your money and possibly even your phone. When it becomes possible to unlock them it will be posted on this Blog and on our website www.unlox.co.uk even if we do not offer the unlock ourselves.
